Using SZP-04 or SZP-06 elecrtodes to analyze alkaline aluminium oxide dispersion and measure the influence of pH.
Introduction Alkaline aluminium oxide has many practical uses and is typically applied for fillers, abrasives, ceramics, adsorbents, adhesives and coatings.
Method Determination of the zeta potential
Sample Dispersion of an aluminum oxide (boehmite)
Solid Content 1 - 65%
Sample Preparation Add 400 ml de-ionized water to 4 g of aluminum oxide and stir for 15 min. Set the conductivity to approx. 150 µS/cm (20 °C) using a (10%) KCl solution. For pH adjustment, add 0.1 M NaOH solution.
Equipment SZP-04 or SZP-06, special electrodes for pigment dispersions, filter circle (white ribbon).
Result The surface charge of aluminum oxide particles is dependent on the suspension pHs. For pHs below approx. 9.1, the studied particle surfaces were found to carry a positive charge, whilst they assumed negative charges at higher pHs when the isoelectricc point was exceeded.
