Streaming current detector for colloidal charge measurement in aqueous solutions
The Mütek PCD-05 Particle Charge Detector measures colloidal dissolved substances in an aqueous sample by detecting the streaming potential and titration with a poly-electrolyte titrant or an acid/ base to the point of zero charge. It is widely applied in the paper industry, in chemical- and pigment applications as well as in water treatment or the food and beverage industry.
The PCD-05 offers a modular concept and is available in three versions: Light, Standard and Travel. The Light version comes with a small display providing a start / stop functionality to switch the streaming potential measurement on and off. The Standard version has a touchpanel display. The Travel version includes an automatic titrator module which can be operated and programmed only with the included touchpanel display. All modules can be connected simply via plug and play, which allows upgrading from basic (Light version) to high-end (Travel version) at any time.
The instrument is intended for indoor use at temperatures in the range of 10 °C to 40 °C (50 °F – 104 °F). It is rated for voltages of 100 - 240 VAC at 50 Hz / 60 Hz.
Basically, every aqueous sample can be measured with the Mütek PCD-05. In order to detect a streaming potential, the particle sizes in the sample should be between 1 nm and 500 µm. Samples with a conductivity of up to 20 - 50 mS/cm (depending on ion background) can be measured directly otherwise they should be diluted. Commonly, pigments, solids, fibers and functional additives are applied as a 1% solution, Higher or lower concentrations are possible depending on titrant consumption.
