System variation from fibre-supply lines is present in every mill. Recently a two-ply linerboard machine producing 135.000MT/year of test liner from recycled fibre was suffering from variable strength, overdosing of fibre and additives and elevated break frequency.
BTG experts conducted detailed audits of the stock preparation, approach system and forming section. The process control strategy for the dilution control chain was adjusted, as was the setup of the early forming section. In several steps, over several months, improvement changes were made alongside training and workshops for mill operators.
The results were clear: basis weight variability was reduced 1.95gsm on the test liner grades and wet-end breaks were reduced by 30%.
