How free and dissolved gas affect tissue creping performance
-
Creates uneven crepe structure and softness differences
-
Increases variable moisture reaching the Yankee dryer
-
Contributes to reel quality and converting problems
A tissue sheet with variable formation and moisture interacts unevenly with the Yankee dryer and creping blade — and the creping process amplifies those non-uniformities
Gas variability affects creping performance
A tissue sheet with variable formation and moisture interacts unevenly with the Yankee dryer and creping blade. The result is a variable crepe structure, local softness differences, reduced bulk uniformity, and irregular surface appearance. The crepe process amplifies pre-existing sheet non-uniformities rather than correcting them.
Gas can produce bubbles in the forming zone, causing thin areas, pinholes, and weak spots. Tissue grades are particularly sensitive to these effects because their low basis weight provides little opportunity to mask sheet non-uniformities. Holes and weak spots originating at the headbox may be amplified by creping, leading to problems such as sheet breaks and quality rejects.
Variability that is visible at creping often starts earlier in the process. Gas fluctuations in the headbox and approach flow may influence drainage, retention, and fiber mat structure, causing variable performance of the press and Yankee dryer. This results in variable creping moisture, affecting the bulk and softness of the sheet produced by creping.
These effects aren’t limited to the tissue machine — non-uniform moisture and crepe structure often surface downstream as product quality issues and converting problems, even when the sheet appears acceptable at the tissue machine.
Typical symptoms tied to gas variability at the creping blade
-
Variable Yankee drying load
-
Non-uniform final moisture
-
Reel quality issues
-
Converting problems
-
Inconsistent crepe quality
